DISEASE SCREENING IN AMPHIBIANS: COURSE FOR AMPHIBIAN BIOLOGISTS

12th-18th October 2010 Ivoloina Who is running the course? The course will be run by Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust in collaboration the Museo Regionale di Scienze Naturali (Torino, Italy), the Amphibian Specialist Group / ACSAM , the School of Environmental Sciences and Development, North West University (South Africa) and the University of Antananarivo. Course faculty will include visiting international and local experts in amphibian disease and research.

[01/2010] Sabin Award, 2009. The history.

I recently received the prestigious Sabin Award for the Amphibian Conservation for 2009. This award is an important recognition by IUCN to the work that I carried out, together with Herilala Randriamahazo, as chairs of the Amphibian Specialist Group / Madagascar and promoters of the ACSAM Initiative.
Most recently I have published the Sahonagasy Action Plan and the monograph A Conservation Strategy for the Amphibians of Madagascar. I will be with my friend Herilala (we started our scientific and conservation collaboration several year back, in 1994) at the luncheon in New York, on 14th January 2010 to take this award from the hands of Andy Sabin himself and accompanied by other actors in biodiversity conservation. In this occasion we will present the extremely rich amphibian diversity of Madagascar (more than 240 described species, and around other 150 candidate species, all with a 100% of endemism), the threats for their survivorship, and the strategies that we are developing to boost their conservation.
I also hope that this award will be a first step in our ongoing projects and that 2010, the Year of Biodiversity, will also be the occasion of a renaissance for amphibians in the World, and in particular for Madagascar, seen the bad events that occurred in 2009, and that also affected the biodiversity management and conservation.
